XULA picks up big win at BRCC

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Xavier softball team picked up a huge win on the road Thursday night, splitting a doubleheader with Baton Rouge Community College.

In the first game, a rough second inning proved costly in an 8-5 loss. BRCC scored 5 runs, only two of which were earned, to open up a lead that a potent XULA offense could not overcome.

Second baseman Lexi McLin was the star at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing and a run scored, but several other Gold Nuggets had big moments.

Jada Jones, Morgan Malveaux, and Jada Hughes each connected on a double, and Jones, Hughes, Morgan, Amireeya Malveaux, and Destiny Lavigne all had an RBI.

The XULA offense exploded to life in Game 2, and the Gold Nuggets used a big inning of their own to set up a 7-1 win.

In the top of the fourth, the Gold Nuggets put together one of their most complete innings of the season, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits, the most notable of which was a 3-RBI triple by Jones.

Jones, who started in left field and batted leadoff, went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples in the game.

Starting pitcher Morgan Malveaux had her best outing of the season, working a complete game and striking out 6 while allowing just 4 hits.

Offensively, the Gold Nuggets were stellar. All told, XULA tallied 11 hits and 5 stolen bases.

Next up for Xavier is a three-game RRAC series against Jarvis Christian at home, Friday and Saturday at Park of Heroes in New Orleans. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, with a second game to follow.
