SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A much-improved Xavier defense was not quite enough to pick up a win in either half of a doubleheader against RRAC opponent Our Lady of the Lake, with XULA falling 3-1 and 11-2.

Game 1 was, despite the disappointing outcome, one of the Gold Rush's best defensive showings of the year.

Starting pitcher Chad McKenzie worked 4.2 innings and struck out 8 while issuing just 3 walks, and the XULA defense was error-free.

Offensively, Paul Ramseur and Lawrence Steed were the top performers. Ramseur went 2-for-3 while Steed went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jayden Smith provided the Gold Rush with their only RBI, a sac fly that scored Steed in the first inning.

In the second game, Smith had the strongest performance at the plate, going 2-for-3. Cohen Boyd went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kameron Briggs provided the other RBI, a sacrifice fly that scored Chase DeLoach.

Xavier returns to action Tuesday night with a mid-week, non-conference game against in-city opponents Southern New Orleans. First pitch is scheduled for 6 at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
