Gold Rush log big win at New College of Florida

BRADENTON, Fla. - Xavier Men's Tennis faced a new, but strong program Sunday, but came away with a hard-fought, 5-2 win over New College of Florida. 

XULA (12-5), currently ranked No. 7 in the NAIA national poll and No. 3 in the ITA ratings, secured its win by taking 5-of-6 singles matches. 

In the most thrilling match of the day, one that featured back-to-back tiebreaker sets, Nereo Suarez defeated ITA Top 50 player TImothy Phung 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 10-8. Suraez is currently ranked as the No. 6 single in the nation, and Phung is ranked No. 23. 

Although the Gold Rush did not earn the doubles point, Suarez and Christian Sanchez, who have stormed from unranked to the No. 4 doubles pair in the nation since the start of the Spring season, defeated Konstantin Kukaras and Pedro Lemos 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Kukaras and Lemos are ranked as the No. 48 NAIA doubles pair by ITA. 

Sanchez, who has surged to a No. 12 national ranking as a single, defeated Carlos Quinones 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. 

The Gold Rush's other points came from wins by Gabriel Velez at No. 4, Edilson Rosa at No. 5, and Martn Rivera at No. 6. 

Xavier returns to action at 9 a.m. Central, 10 a.m. Eastern, Monday with a bit road match at No. 14 Southeastern in Lakeland, Fla.
