XULA opens Southwest series with 7-1 win

WESTWEGO, La. - XULA Softball extended its win streak to 5 by virtue of a ?-? Red River Athletic Conference win over Southwest (N.M.) Wednesday night at the John Alario Jr. Sports Complex.

The unquestioned star of the night was freshman pitcher Morgan Malveaux, who improved her record to 7-6 with a complete-game 2-hitter in which she struck out 11 batters.

Malveaux, who batted third for the Gold Nuggets, had a perfect showing at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, and 2 RBI.

Offense came readily for XULA on the night; Xavier had 13 hits on the night and had four players hit safely at least twice.

Besides Malveaux, left fielder and leadoff batter Jada Jones went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, centerfielder Miya Covington went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and shortstop Amaya Williams went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

XULA's other RBI came from second baseman Lexi McLin, right fielder Destiny Lavinge, and catcher Madelynn Hernandez, the latter of whom went 1-for-2 on the night.

The teams wrap their series Thursday morning with a doubleheader, again at the John Alario Jr. Sports Complex. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 9 a.m. Ticket prices will be $8 for adults and $5 for children. Infants will be admitted for free.
