Gold Nuggets fall to LCU in conference play

PINEVILLE, La. - The No. 6 Xavier women's tennis team lost in conference play for the first time this season, taking a 4-2 loss to No. 14 Louisiana Christian. 

The Wildcats (11-5, 4-1 RRAC) took 2-of-3 doubles matches from Xavier (14-6, 2-1 RRAC), although the Gold Nuggets' Ana Sabikova and Makai Sales defeated Ana Sofia Ferrer Martinez and Akari Uchiyama 6-2 at No. 3. 

In the singles matches, the word of the day was drama as 5-of-6 matches went to a third set. Unfortunately for Xavier, LCU won three of those deciding sets, while Xavier claimed two, and the fifth set, a No. No. 3 singles match between Sabikova and Valeria Callejo, was abandoned the contest was decided. 

XULA picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 5, with McKenna Wheatley defeating Raquel Coelho Rodrigues 6-1, 6-1 and Anais Yakan defeating Ferrer Martinez 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. 

The Gold Nuggets return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with a neutral-site conference match in Central Louisiana against Texas A&M Texarkana.
