Higginson has massive day as XULA splits with Southwest

NEW ORLEANS - The Xavier baseball team won its third game in the last six Saturday, splitting an RRAC doubleheader with Southwest, winning the first game 5-4 before falling 9-7 in Game 2

In the first game, the Gold Rush got a quality start from pitcher Jeremy Clark, who worked six innings and picked up his first win of the season. Coby Guillory got the save with a quick effort in the game's last inning.

Offensively, Game 1 was the Kai Higginson show. The big man who patrols first base for XULA went 2-for-2 with 2 homers and 4 RBI. His 3-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd put the Gold Rush ahead for good.

Cohen Boyd was also strong, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a steal, and a run scored.

Higginson continued to impress in the second game, going 1-for-2 with 2 RBI, giving him 3 hits and 6 RBI on the day.

Shortstop Lawrence Steed, the Gold Rush's leadoff batter, had an incredible second game, going 2-for-2 with an RBI, 3 steals, and 4 runs scored.

Cory Rushing, who caught the second contest, went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, and Boyd went 2-for-2.

The teams wrap the series Sunday at 2 p.m. with a single game at Skelly-Rupp Stadium.
