XULA earns berth in RRAC finals with win over No. 14 LCU

NEW ORLEANS - The XULA women's tennis team avenged a regular-season loss and stormed into the RRAC championship match Friday with a 4-0 win over No. 14 Louisiana Christian.

Xavier (17-7), ranked No. 6 in the nation and seeded third in the RRAC tournament, got the doubles point and wins at No. 2, 3, and 6 singles. All other matches were abandoned when XULA earned its fourth point of the day.

The last time the two teams played, the Wildcats won 4-2 at the LSU-Alexandria Invitational. Friday, though, it was all Xavier.

LCU, the two-seed, won at No. 2 doubles, but the point belonged to Xavier thanks to wins by Maja Brnic and McKenna Wheatley at No. 1 and Valeria Ortega and Asadah Ma'at at No. 3 doubles, both by a score of 7-5.

Brnic and Wheatley defeated Farren Allysia Sandy and Elizaveta Mikhailova, while Ortega and Ma'at defeated Ana Sofia Ferrer Martinez and Akari Uchiyama.

In singles play, Wheatley defeated Raquel Coelho Rodrigues 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, Ana Sabikova defeated Valeria Callejo 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, and Ma'at defeated Sandy 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Gold Nuggets will play LSU-Alexandria Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Red River tournament crown on the line. LSUA, the tournament's No. 1 seed and the No. 8 team in the NAIA, defeated Our Lady of the Lake on Friday.
