Gold Nuggets cruise past Texas College in conference doubleheader

TYLER, Texas - Friday, the XULA softball defense continued its recent streak of stinginess, but the Gold Nugget offense sprang to life in a big way, leading to a pair of mercy-rule wins over RRAC opponent Texas College.

Xavier, which had blanked Dillard in both halves of a doubleheader Wednesday for wins of 1-0 and 2-0, cruised past the steers by final scores of 20-1 and 15-1.

In Game 1, pitcher Bella Rivera worked all six innings of the run-rule-shortened game, striking out 10 while allowing just 3 hits.

Offensively, the numbers were impressive across the board for XULA, but second baseman Lexi McLin and catcher Madelynn Hernandez had the most impressive days.

McLin went  4-for-5 with 3 doubles, 5 RBI, and 3 runs scored, while Hernandez had the best game of her young career, a 4-for-5, 5-RBI showing with a run scored.

Senior designated player Arin Dale went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored, while right fielder Destiny Lavigne went 2-for-4 with a triple, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, center fielder Miya Covington went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, and left fielder Jada Jones went 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored.

In Game 2, pitcher Essynce Wallace followed up her incredible, 10-inning one-hitter against Dillard by striking out 8 batters while allowing 5 hits over a 5-inning, run-rule game.

McLin had another sterling performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, 2 RBI, and 3 runs scored.

Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored, while Lavigne went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a pair of runs scored, and first baseman Jada Hughes went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Covington went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored, and shortstop Amaya Williams went 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.

The teams wrap their series with a single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
