XULA falls to Morningside in NAIA Round of 16

MOBILE, Ala. - The Gold Rush's 2025-2026 campaign came to an end Wednesday in the NAIA Round of 16, as a tenacious Xavier was edged 4-3 by Morningside.

XULA split the singles matches with Morningside, but lost the doubles point.

Senior Nereo Suarez was impressive, as has been the case all season. He defeated Marcos Menendez Hervella 7-6(0), 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and partnered with freshman sensation Christian Sanchez to defeat Menendez Hervella and Alexis Diaz 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Sanchez picked up the win on the No. 2 court, defeating Diaz 6-1, 6-4. The Gold Rush's other point came from Gabriel Velez at No. 4 singles by virtue of a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jesse Gerth.

XULA finished the season with a 15-8 record, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that the team played 18 ranked opponents, plus two more teams from NCAA Division 1. This was the fourth time in the last 5 years that the Gold Rush reached the national quarterfinals.
