Gold Nuggets fall in NAIA quarterfinals

MOBILE, Ala. - No.5 XULA put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell 4-2 to No. 4 William Carey in the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Quarterfinals.

The Gold Nuggets claimed the doubles point, but took some tough losses in the singles matches.

McKenna Wheatley and Maja Brnic defeated Isabella Lechuga and Victoria Vieten 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Asadah Ma'at and Valeria Ortega defeated Malak Abarkane and Li-Hsien Lin at No. 3.

Ortega, whose performance at No. 4 singles was the deciding point in Xavier's win over SCAD-Atlanta in the Round of 16, had another great showing and defeated Abarkane 6-3, 6-3.

XULA wraps the 2025-2026 campaign with a 19-8 overall record, which included an RRAC title and a win over NCAA Division I opponent Norfolk State. Most impressively, 16 of the Gold Nuggets' wins were over nationally ranked opponents.
