Gold Nuggets start season with convincing win over Wiley

METAIRIE, La. - The Gold Nuggets couldn't have scripted their season-opener much better than Sunday's 4-0 win over Wiley played out.

Xavier (1-0) got an early goal, then peppered Wiley (0-1) with three second-half goals in quick succession to set up the comfortable win. 

Newcomer Julia Gurgel logged the season's first goal at the 8-minute mark, with an assist from Alina Paiz and Keira Hardstaff, an effort that would have been sufficient on its own. 

However, the Gold Nuggets scored a pair of goals in the 70th minute and one more in the 73rd to put the match away. 

Juliana Kottbauer scored at 70:02 and Anita Roese at 70:55. Roese was good for a brace in the first match, having also contributed the night's fourth goal. 

Defensively, XULA was smothering, holding Wiley to a single shot, which was on goal, and no corner kicks. Goalkeeper Luisa Bella posted a clean sheet. 

Next up for Xavier will be a neutral-site match against Campbellsville in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, on Tuesday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
