XULA falls in conference road match against Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Xavier's men's soccer team came up short in its first SSAC road match, falling 4-0 to Faulkner in a battle of teams appearing in the NAIA national polls.

The Gold Rush (3-3, 1-1 SSAC) received votes in the most recent NAIA rankings, while Faulkner (6-2, 2-1 SSAC) checked in at No. 22. 

Thursday night, XULA kept the score close through much of the match. The Gold Rush trailed 1-0 at the half and were within 2 goals of the Eagles until the last 15 minutes of play. 

However, Faulkner's goals in the 5th, 59th, 74th, and 84th minutes were the difference. 

Gold Rush keeper Lenno Schmidt performed admirably, making 5 saves on the night while facing 9 shots on goal. 

Xavier is in the midst of a four-game conference road trip. The Faulkner game was the first leg of that journey. 

Next up for the Gold Rush is a Saturday visit to Mobile. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
