Box Score NEW ORLEANS —
Devin Andrew scored 14 of his
career-high 21 points in the second half Saturday to lead Xavier University of
Louisiana to a 71-49 men's basketball victory over Texas College at The Barn.
Xavier, No. 14 in Victory Sports Network's NAIA
Division I rankings, is 6-0 in consecutive seasons for the first time since
1940-41.
The Gold Rush, playing its alumni homecoming game,
never lost the lead after Andrew went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line during
Xavier's opening possession. Xavier led 31-23 at halftime, and the final margin
was the game's largest.
Harold Cleveland, with 10 points, was Xavier's
other double-figure scorer. Cleveland scored in double figures for the second
consecutive game and recorded his first three steals of the season.
Dannie Woods and
Kelechi Okoroha each grabbed seven
rebounds for the Rush, and Woods' total was a season-high.
Shaun Dumas had a
season-high 10 assists and reached double-figures in that category for the
10th time in his career.
Xavier limited Czyz Bennett, a second-team NAIA All-American
in 2007-08, to 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting. Maurice Gay and Xavier Yates scored
eight points apiece for the Steers (1-4), who have a four-game losing streak. The
Steers' 49 points were a season low and the fewest they've scored against Xavier
since the 1949-50 season. It also was the fewest points allowed by Xavier this season.
Xavier shot a season-low 41.4 percent from the floor
but limited Texas College to 39.5 percent — the fifth time in six games a
Rush opponent shot less than 40 percent. The Rush outrebounded the Steers
38-30, committed a season-low 13 turnovers and gained 22.
Xavier will play its first regular-season road game
of the year at 9 p.m. Friday (7 p.m. PST) against MidAmerica Nazarene (3-2)
in the Concordia Thanksgiving Tournament at Irvine, Calif. Texas College's
next game will start at 2 p.m. Wednesday at home against Delta State.
