NEW ORLEANS — Veronica Azubuike had 18 kills,
14 digs, three aces and three blocks Tuesday to lead SUNO to a 17-25, 25-17,
25-18, 25-23 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's volleyball victory over
Xavier University of Louisiana at The Castle.
Wynieka Anderson added 11 kills and hit .526 for
the Lady Knights (5-7 overall, 3-1 GCAC).
Sierra Lyons had 16 kills and
Erin Vincent 11 for
the Gold Nuggets (4-19, 1-3), who have dropped 16 straight.
Celeste Poe had
12 digs, and
Iva Bobkova served three aces.
Azubuike, a freshman, had three kills, and Gabrielle
Carter served consecutive aces during a 7-1 run in the third set which turned
SUNO's 10-9 deficit into a 16-11 lead. The Lady Knights recovered from 3-0 and
15-13 deficits in the final set and scored four of their last six points on
Xavier errors.
Lyons had five kills, Poe had five digs, and Danielle
Jones had two blocks to lead Xavier in its opening-set victory. The Nuggets
trailed 5-3 before taking control with a 10-2 run.
SUNO won both regular-season matches against its
longtime city and conference rival. This is the first season they've met in volleyball.
Xavier will play Judson (Ala.) in its next match at
7 p.m. Friday at The Barn. SUNO will play host to Judson at 3 p.m. Saturday.
