NEW ORLEANS — The University of New Orleans
neutralized Xavier University of Louisiana's two top season scorers to a earn
a 79-62 men's basketball victory Saturday at UNO's Lakefront Arena.
It was a half-exhibition: XULA (10-3) did not count the game
in its record and statistics, but the Privateers (3-4) — the preseason favorite in the Southland Conference — did.
UNO limited
Rayshawn Mart — who entered with a 16.5
scoring average — to three points and
William Loyd (15.8) to seven.
Leading the Gold Rush offense were
Cameron Dumas with 13 points — he was 4-of-5 from
the floor and 4-of-4 from the line —
Cameron Wells with 10 and
TJ Jones with eight.
Wells and Jones are freshmen.
Jaylen Key scored 17 points for the Privateers, who beat
a non-NCAA Division I opponent for the second straight day, and Bryson Robinson and Ahren Freeman
scored 14 apiece. Key had six rebounds, five assists and a block.
UNO led 41-30 at halftime and by 11 or more in the second half. The Privateers'
biggest lead was 64-42 after Freeman's layup with 10:08 remaining.
UNO outshot XULA 50.8 to 48.9 percent from the floor
and outrebounded the Gold Rush 33-25. XULA committed 19 turnovers and gained 12.
Loyd grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Wells also had three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 24 relief minutes.
It was XULA's second exhibition loss this season to an
NCAA Division I opponent. The other was a 77-70 decision Nov. 11 at Southeastern Louisiana.
XULA will break for semester exams, then resume its
schedule at 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at city rival Loyola, ranked third in the NAIA.
XULA is ranked 16th.
