NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Alfred Williams has been named HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions
at the NAIA men's basketball level for Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
During that time the Gold Rush won at home against Edward
Waters (62-54) and Rust (80-59) to remain unbeaten in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
The victory against Rust was memorable; the Rush trailed by 10 points at halftime,
then opened the second half with a 35-2 run.
This is the fifth season that HoopDirt.com has selected
weekly winners at the NCAA, NAIA and two-year levels. Williams is the first recipient
this season from an HBCU (Historically Black College or University).
"Wow — what an honor!" Williams said.
"It's all because of my team: my players, student managers, assistant coaches, training staff and administration team. Hard work still works."
HoopDirt.com announced winners Monday morning. That evening
XULA defeated Philander Smith 85-56 at home to improve to 19-4 overall and 7-0 in the GCAC.
Williams is in his fourth season as XULA head coach and
has an overall record of 71-47.
