LAFAYETTE, La. —
Rayshawn Mart,
Makye Richard and
TJ Jones combined for nearly 70 percent of Xavier University of
Louisiana's points Wednesday in an 84-72 men's basketball loss against Louisiana-Lafayette.
NAIA member XULA counted the game as an
exhibition, but the Ragin' Cajuns of NCAA Division I did not and improved their season record to 3-0.
Mart scored 21 points, Richard 16
and Jones 13. It was a homecoming for Jones, who lives in nearby Opelousas and prepped
at Lafayette Christian Academy, and
Corey Dunning, a Lafayette resident and Lafayette High School graduate.
Dunning had five points, five rebounds, two assists and a block.
Cameron Wells was XULA's rebound leader with six.
Jordan Brown scored 18 points, Theo Akwuba and
Jalen Dalcourt scored 13 apiece, and Greg Williams had 10 for the Cajuns. Akwuba grabbed eight rebounds.
Notable for XULA:
• XULA outscored the Cajuns 44-41 in the second half.
• The Cajuns had one more offensive rebound than XULA,
but the Gold Rush had an 18-7 advantage in second-chance points.
• Mart's 21 points were the most by a XULA
player in an exhibition in the last 16 seasons. Shaun Dumas scored 20 against Alcorn State in December 2008,
and William Loyd scored 20 against Southeastern Louisiana in November 2019.
• Although the stats won't count in XULA's season
totals, Mart had his best 3-point accuracy of the season. The fifth-year standout made 3-of-4.
• Richard had a game-high five steals.
• XULA's 72 points matched its second most in
an exhibition in the last 16 seasons.
It was the ninth game, including two exhibitions, in 28 days
for XULA to open the season. But the Gold Rush — 6-1 in the regular season — have no more games this month.
The next opponent will be Crowley's Ridge at
2 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Convocation Center.
