NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana, the 2022 NAIA national champion
in co-ed competitive cheer, traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., Thursday
for a National Cheerleaders Association camp this weekend.
XULA
is one of numerous schools honing skills. Others at the camp will include
two-year Texas powers Trinity Valley Community College and Navarro Junior College,
both of which are featured in the Netflix series Cheer.
Like XULA, Trinity Valley was a national
champion last season. The Cardinals in April won their 12th NCA title, their
second in a row and fourth in seven years.
Recent NAIA legislation permits
its members to attend NCA events and compete for national honors at that level.
XULA won NAIA nationals in March
with a meet-record score of 93.70 out of a possible 100 points and finished the
season 33-0. In 2021 XULA placed fifth at NAIA nationals.
The 2022-23 academic year is XULA
cheer's fourth as a varsity program. Fall-semester classes will begin Aug. 22.
XULA will begin countable competitions during the spring semester and
play host to its second annual Battle in the Big Easy — featuring cheer
and dance competitions — during the second weekend of February.
NAIA nationals will be March 10-11.
