High-scoring XULA wins 7-team event; NAIA qualifier is Saturday

        NEW ORLEANS — It was more rarefied air for Xavier University of Louisiana cheer when it scored 96.7 points Friday afternoon — its second highest score ever — to win a seven-team competition on the final day of the Battle in the Big Easy competitive cheer and dance meet at XULA's Convocation Center.
        XULA will compete for a third straight day at home when it plays host to an NAIA unaffiliated group qualifying meet at 9 a.m. Saturday. Joining XULA in the meet will be Dillard and Montreat — Jarvis Christian, originally announced as one of the teams, withdrew — and XULA will give its first of two performances at 9:10 a.m. The meet will conclude at approximately 11 a.m.
        XULA won Friday by nearly 16 points over runner-up Langston, which scored 81.2. XULA finished 7-0 in this meet and is 17-0 this season and 50-0 since the start of 2022.
        XULA scored a school-record 98.6 points against Concordia (Mich.) Thursday.
        The winner of Saturday's meet will earn an automatic bid to NAIA nationals March 10-11 at Ypsilanti, Mich. XULA won the national title a year ago — XULA's first NAIA national team championship in any sport.
