XULA's best scores all-time
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana produced another top-of-the-mountain score Saturday to win an NAIA unaffiliated group qualifying meet for the third consecutive year.
The championship also resulted in a third straight automatic berth for XULA to NAIA nationals. The Gold will compete March 10-11 at Ypsilanti, Mich., as the defending champion.
XULA's final score — based on 25 percent of its first-round score and 75 percent of its second-round score — was 97.72, No. 2 on XULA's all-time list. City rival Dillard was second with 75.44 points, and Montreat placed third with 46.97.
XULA this week at home produced the top three final scores in the program's four-year history. In the Battle in the Big Easy, the Gold scored a record 98.6 in a dual against Concordia (Mich.) Thursday, then scored 96.7 Friday to beat six other schools.
But the Friday mark dropped from second to third all-time after XULA produced its Saturday score.
