XULA finishes sixth at NAIA nationals

        YPSILANTI, Mich. — Defending champion Xavier University of Louisiana finished sixth out of 15 teams Saturday at NAIA competitive cheer nationals.
        XULA's final score — based on 25 percent of its Friday preliminary performance and 75 percent on Saturday — was 86.35 out of a possible 100 points. First-day leader St. Ambrose won its first national title in this sport with a meet-record 95.51, breaking XULA's 2022 mark of 93.70. Concordia (Mich.) was second at 90.76, and Oklahoma City was third at 89.68.
        XULA scored 85.78 Saturday after ranking fifth in Friday's preliminaries with 88.05.
        XULA's fourth-year program qualified for NAIA nationals for the third consecutive season. In addition to the 2022 national title, the Gold placed fifth in 2021.
        XULA has one more meet this season: the National Cheerleaders Association national meet April 5-9 at Daytona Beach, Fla.
