SAN ANTONIO, Texas —
Our Lady of the Lake rallied Saturday to deny Xavier University of Louisiana men's track and field
a second consecutive team title at the Red River
Athletic Conference Championships.
The Saints, who trailed the Gold Rush
by 48 points after Friday's events, outscored the Gold Rush 204-135 on the final day
to win the title for the second time in three years. OLLU's overall total was 266 points,
and XULA placed second with 245.
OLLU tied Wiley's 2017 men's record for most points in
an RRAC meet. XULA's points are the most by an RRAC runner-up and No. 3 overall.
Five events — 100, 200, 5,000
and 10,000 meters, plus the javelin — carried OLLU. The Saints got 1-2 finishes in each
of those events and outscored XULA 119-33.
XULA won two events and finished the meet with seven titles.
Seth Alexander earned his
second victory of the meet with a long jump of 7.06 meters/23 feet, 2 inches, and
Damien Trahan notched his first title with 2.00 meters/6-6 3/4 in the high jump.
Alexander scored a team-high 18 points Saturday,
and he and
Thomas Donald led XULA in two-day scoring with 28 points apiece.
Third for the Gold Rush with 26 points was
Colin Rowe. The senior transfer from the University of Maryland
scored in seven track events, including second place Friday in the 400
and a fourth Saturday in the 200. He helped the Gold Rush place second in the meet finale,
the 1,600 relay.
Rowe's 400 time of 47.85 is XULA's fastest
since the program was revived in 2010.
Three other XULA athletes —
Tele Jegede (23),
Lejaune George (21 1/2) and
Damoy Boyd (20 1/2) — also
reached 20 points.
The runner-up team finish was XULA's fourth in its
last five conference meets. The XULA men finished second in their previous home, the Gulf Coast Athletic,
in 2018, 2019 and 2021. There was no GCAC meet in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
