SUGAR LAND, Texas —
Xavier University of Louisiana scored three second-half goals
Saturday to pull away for a 4-1 Red River Athletic Conference women's soccer
victory against North American University.
The Gold Nuggets (3-2 overall, 3-0 RRAC)
won their third in a row, all in conference, and won for the first time
on the road during the regular season. This is XULA's first year of women's and men's soccer.
XULA trailed 1-0 before tying the
score in the 39th minute on
Amelia Suma's goal with an assist from
Faye Butterworth.
It was 1-all at halftime.
Luci Schroeder's goal in the 48th minute put
XULA ahead to stay, and the Gold Nuggets added goals by
Britni Belmonte in the 56th minute
and
Gabriela Gonzalez — Belmonte assisted — in the 83rd minute.
North American (3-2, 1-2) led for nearly 26 minutes.
Genevieve Colon scored in the 13th minute with an assist from Alejandra Maria Acos.
XULA had advantages of 18-8 in shots and 11-4
in shots on goal. Winning goalkeeper
Theresa Wiesiolek made three saves.
The Stallions lost their second in a row.
"The first half we didn't play to our standard, but we turned it around for the last 45 minutes," XULA head
coach
Ashley Cordeiro said. "The second half was a half to be proud of, and some good soccer was played."
Joining Belmonte, Butterworth, Gonzalez, Suma and Wiesiolek in XULA's starting lineup were
Grete Nelson,
Amelia Thompson,
Amora Altmon,
Maureen Owusu,
Millicent Owusu and
Abby Martin.
XULA, Texas A&M-Texarkana (4-0) and Louisiana Christian (3-0)
are the only teams unbeaten in RRAC games. The Eagles won 3-0 at home Saturday against Houston-Victoria,
and the Wildcats won 5-1 at Paul Quinn. There are 14 RRAC women's soccer teams.
XULA will play at home twice next week
at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, La.: 1 p.m. Thursday against LSU-Shreveport and 5 p.m. Saturday
against Texas A&M-Texarkana. Admission is free to all XULA soccer games at Lafreniere.
