VICTORIA, Texas —
Samira Roper scored in the 41st minute Thursday to lift
Xavier University of Louisiana to a 1-0 Red River Athletic Conference
women's soccer victory against Houston-Victoria.
The Gold Nuggets (10-3-1 overall,
9-0-1 RRAC) will stay on the road and visit RRAC opponent Huston-Tillotson
at 1 p.m. Saturday in Austin, Texas.
Roper scored in eight of
XULA's last nine games. The junior forward leads the Red River
with 15 goals, which also is a XULA season record. This is the program's
second varsity season.
Assisting on the goal
was
Luci Schroeder, whose 38 points lead the conference.
Schroeder has 12 goals and 14 assists; in the statistical rankings,
two points are awarded for goals, one for assists.
XULA goalkeeper
Theresa Wiesiolek (9-2-1)
produced three saves in her fifth shutout of the season. It was the team's ninth shutout.
Houston-Victoria (9-4, 6-4) lost its second in a row.
XULA has a pair of 1-0 Red River victories this season,
both on the road. In the other, Roper scored Oct. 5 at Texas A&M-Texarkana.
The Gold Nuggets improved their program-record
unbeaten streak to 11 — 10 victories and a tie. XULA outscored
opponents 61-3 during the streak.
XULA leads the Red River by one point over
LSU-Sherevport (9-1 Red River) and three points over Louisiana Christian (8-1-1).
The conference awards three points for each victory, one point for each tie
and zero points for each loss. XULA has 28 points, LSUS 27 and Louisiana Christian 25.
