Generals end Gold Nuggets' unbeaten streak, deny XULA 1st place

2024 Red River Athletic Conference women's soccer standings

METAIRIE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana's bid for a second consecutive Red River Athletic Conference regular-season championship in women's soccer took a hit Thursday when LSU-Alexandria defeated the Gold Nuggets 1-0 at Lafreniere Park.
Freshman Hille Baumfalk's goal, her second of the season, in the 77th minute gave the Generals their fourth consecutive shutout victory and ended XULA's school-record 12-game unbeaten streak.
XULA (11-4-1 overall, 10-1-1 RRAC) missed an opportunity to take sole possession of first place by a point over LSU-Shreveport. Instead the Gold Nuggets fell into a second-place tie with Louisiana Christian, XULA's home opponent in the regular-season finale. XULA and LCU trail LSUS, 11-1 in the RRAC.
LSUS would win the regular-season title with a victory at eighth-place Jarvis Christian. XULA would:
        •  Win the title outright with a victory against LCU and an LSUS loss.
        •  Share the title with a victory against LCU and an LSUS-Jarvis tie.
If XULA and LCU tie, LSUS would clinch the title — and an automatic bid to NAIA nationals — regardless of its outcome at Jarvis.
The Red River awards three points for each victory, one point for each tie and zero points for each loss in conference games. LSUS has 33 points, XULA and Louisiana Christian have 31 apiece, and LSUA (9-5-2, 8-2-2) has 26.
About a minute before Baumfalk's goal, referees disallowed a right-corner-kick by XULA's Luci Schroeder — her shot found the net after caroming off the left post — because of a foul near the net.
XULA was 11-0-1 in its last 12 games before Thursday and had won its last three. The loss was the Gold Nuggets' first since 2-1 at home Aug. 31 against NCAA Division II Spring Hill.
XULA and Louisiana Christian will kick off at noon Saturday at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans City Park. Then XULA's men will play LCU at 2:30 p.m. Admission will be free.
The Gold Nuggets have clinched a first-round home game in the eight-team RRAC Tournament next week. If the tournament winner is not the regular-season champion, it will earn the league's other automatic bid to NAIA nationals.
