2024 Red River Athletic Conference women's soccer standings
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's soccer suffered its second 1-0 defeat in three days, this time to Louisiana Christian Saturday at Pan American Stadium.
It was the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Gold Nuggets (11-5-1 overall, 10-2-1 RRAC) finished third in the 14-team standings and earned the No. 3 seed for the eight-team RRAC Tournament. XULA in the first round will play sixth-seeded Houston-Victoria at 11 a.m. Thursday (free admission) at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, La. Quarterfinal winners will advance to Texarkana, Texas, for the final two rounds Nov. 12 and 14.
Giselle Laing's header in the 28th minute — Maryane Mafra and Maria Alonso assisted — scored the goal. Winning goalkeeper Jaycee Woods had five saves.
Louisiana Christian (12-4-2, 11-1-1) broke a tie with XULA for second place in the conference. The Wildcats have won six straight and 11 of their last 12.
It was a reversal of fortune for XULA. A year ago, when the first-year program won the RRAC regular season, the Gold Nuggets clinched in the final week with 1-0 road victories against LSU-Alexandria and Louisiana Christian. The 1-0 loss Thursday to LSUA ended XULA's school-record 12-game unbeaten streak.
LSU-Shreveport (15-3, 12-1) won 5-1 at Jarvis Christian to clinch its first RRAC regular-season championship in this sport. LSUS joined the conference in 2010.
