2024 Red River Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament
METAIRIE, La. —
Third-seeded Xavier University of Louisiana trailed after 70 seconds Thursday
but rebounded for a 4-1 women's soccer victory against sixth-seeded Houston-Victoria
in the opening round of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament at Lafreniere Park.
The Gold Nuggets (12-5-1)
snapped their two-game losing streak and advanced to a 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday semifinal game at Judy Kelley Morgan Field in Texarkana, Texas, against second-seeded Louisiana Christian.
The championship game will be two days later.
Crislyn Gregory's goal, her second of the season,
put XULA ahead to stay in the 57th minute.
Chloe Spencer's goal in the second minute
gave the Jaguars (11-6) the lead. But in the 23rd minute
Samira Roper extended her XULA season
record with her 17th goal, and it was 1-all at halftime.
XULA pulled away on goals by
Faye Butterworth
in the 77th minute and
Shakiana Dagher in the 88th. Butterworth played for the first time in 11
games after recovering from an injury.
Julia de Souza assisted on the second and third goals.
XULA goalkeeper
Theresa Wiesiolek (10-4-1)
produced four saves and reached 10 victories for the second time in as many seasons.
Prior to Thursday, the Gold Nuggets were 1-10 all-time
when opponents scored first. This is XULA's second season of varsity soccer.
