Julius Hell and
VanDer Woody won in doubles and singles Tuesday to lead Xavier University of Louisiana's men to a 4-1 victory against Oakland City in the first round of NAIA nationals at Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center.
The Gold Rush (15-10, ranked 10th and seeded 11th) will play Middle Georgia (15-4, ranked eighth and seeded sixth) in the round of 16 at 9 a.m. CDT Wednesday. Venue address is 851 Gaillard Drive, zip code 36608, phone 251-208-5181. Admission is free for every round.
Hell and Woody clinched the doubles point with their 6-2 victory against Willem Cilliers and Louki Nivarlet. Hell ended the one-hour, 55-minute match at No. 2 singles when he defeated Francisco Perez Esnoala 6-2, 6-4.
VanDer Woody beat Sebastian Bahamondes 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and
Nereo Suarez defeated Christian Salmeron 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.
Dedric Ray and
Ivan Vazquez recorded XULA's other doubles victory, 6-1 against Salmeron and Juanes Pinto.
Pinto scored the only point for the Mighty Oaks — 16-7, ranked 25th and seeded 23rd — with his 6-1, 6-1 victory against Vazquez on court five.
