Sanchez claims Flight A Singles title at HBCU Nationals

ATLANTA - Xavier sophomore Christian Sanchez completed his outstanding week at the HBCU National Championships Tournament by etching his name among the all-time greats of XULA Men's Tennis.

Sanchez, playing in the top-tier Flight A Singles Bracket, defeated 6th-seeded Sergia Lopez Guillen of North Carolina Central 7-6(5), 6-2 to win the HBCU title Sunday morning at the South Fulton Tennis Center.

Sunday was the perfect sign-off for Sanchez, a native of Bogotá, Colombia, who stormed through a field littered with NCAA Division talent.

Sanchez, the 7th seed, received a first-round bye, then defeated Marcus Weeks of Howard in the Round of 16, 2nd-seeded Szymon Malecki of Norfolk State in the quarterfinals, and 5th-seeded Rafael Padilha of Hampton in the semifinals to set up his appearance in the finals.

All told, members of the Gold Rush tennis team earned six quarterfinal appearances, three semifinal appearances, and one finals appearance in five competitions - the Flights A, B, and C Singles and A and B doubles - at the HBCU Nationals.

XULA will be back on the court next week, albeit closer to home. Next up for Xavier is the ITA Gulf Regional Championships in Thibodaux, Sept. 25-27.
