A Legacy Beyond the Game: Xavier Athletics to Unveil Mural Honoring Tennis Pioneer Jimmie McDaniel

2022 Xavier Athletics Hall of Fame inductee to be celebrated during Homecoming Week with mural unveiling featuring nationally recognized sports artist Mike Sullivan.

NEW ORLEANS, La. (November 4, 2026) — Xavier University of Louisiana Athletics will celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of tennis pioneer Jimmie McDaniel with a special mural unveiling on Thursday, November 5, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Xavier University of Louisiana Tennis Center.

The unveiling, held during Xavier's 2026 Homecoming Week, will honor one of the most accomplished African American tennis players of his generation, whose athletic excellence and determination helped challenge racial barriers in American sports.
Members of the Jimmie McDaniel Tennis Legacy Foundation will be in attendance, along with Mike Sullivan, the nationally recognized sports artist and muralist commissioned to create the tribute.

Long before Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson became household names, Jimmie McDaniel was challenging the racial barriers that prevented Black athletes from competing on tennis's biggest stages. A standout tennis player at Xavier University of Louisiana, McDaniel captured four American Tennis Association (ATA) men's singles championships in 1939, 1940, 1941, and 1946. Between 1939 and 1941, he won an extraordinary 38 of 43 tournaments, establishing himself as one of the most dominant players of his era.

On July 29, 1940, McDaniel made history when he faced World No. 1 Don Budge in a landmark interracial exhibition match at Harlem's Black-owned Cosmopolitan Tennis Club. At a time when segregation defined much of American sports, the match represented far more than athletic competition. It challenged the boundaries of who could compete, who could belong, and who deserved an opportunity to demonstrate their greatness.

McDaniel's accomplishments helped pave the way for future generations of Black tennis players and contributed to the broader movement toward integration in American tennis. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements and lasting contributions to the sport, McDaniel was inducted into the Xavier University of Louisiana Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.

The new mural will serve as a permanent tribute to McDaniel's accomplishments and his place in Xavier's athletic history. The artwork was created by Mike Sullivan, a nationally recognized sports artist known for his distinctive chiseled painting style, which uses structure-defining lines and dramatic contrasts to bring athletic figures to life.

Sullivan has created sports murals and artwork for some of the nation's most prominent athletic institutions and venues, including the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, UCLA, Arizona State University, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. His work celebrates athletic achievement while preserving the stories of individuals whose contributions extend beyond competition.

The unveiling will bring together members of the Xavier community, representatives of the Jimmie McDaniel Tennis Legacy Foundation, and supporters of the sport to recognize a pioneer whose impact continues to resonate.

For Xavier University of Louisiana, McDaniel's story represents more than athletic achievement. His determination to compete at the highest level despite the restrictions of segregation reflects the University's longstanding commitment to excellence, opportunity, and the pursuit of a more just and humane society.

The mural will provide a lasting reminder to current and future Xavier student-athletes that their opportunities were made possible, in part, by individuals who had the courage to challenge barriers and open doors for others.
As Xavier celebrates Homecoming Week, the dedication offers an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader New Orleans community to honor an extraordinary Xavierite whose legacy continues to inspire.
