Sanchez wins 2nd straight tournament as XULA sweeps at ITA Gulf Regionals

THIBODAUX, La. - Xavier sophomore Christian Sanchez has made winning a habit this fall, and on Sunday he got some company, as the Gold Rush swept the singles and doubles draws at the ITA Gulf Regional Championships.

Sanchez, who last week won the top singles prize at the HBCU National Championships, took home a second singles title after winning a pair of Sunday matches.

The semifinals proved his tougher challenge, but Sanchez overcame a spirited effort from William Carey's Alpay Guler to win 7-6(5), 7-5.

In the championship match, Sanchez took on Dillard's Siddharth Arya, defeating his crosstown opponent 6-3, 6-1.

But the winning did not stop there for the Gold Rush. In the doubles final, the team of Edilson Rosa and Fatih Sisic faced a tough challenge from Dillard's Arya and Tarique Bobia. Ultimately, the XULA duo won out 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

Martin Rivera, who on Saturday had earned a spot in the men's singles semifinals, fell 6-2, 6-2 to Arya in an early match on Sunday.

The ITA Gulf Regionals, hosted this year by Dillard in conjunction with the Thibodaux Regional Wellness Center, brought together the top NAIA student-athletes from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas over a three-day competition.

Xavier will continue its fall tournament play Oct. 2 and 3 when the Gold Rush participate in the Big Easy Classic, a tournament hosted by NCAA Division I program LSU-New Orleans at the Privateer Tennis Center.
