NAIA No. 20 William Carey spoils Gold Rush opener

        HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Kolby Godbolt scored in the 60th minute Sunday evening to lift NAIA No. 20 William Carey to a 1-0 men's soccer victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
        It was XULA's first regular-season game of 2024. William Carey is 1-0-1.
        XULA and Carey had eight shots apiece, but the Gold Rush had just one shot on goal — by Leonardo Menzen in the sixth minute. Gustavo Oliveira — XULA's leading scorer and the Red River Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in 2023 — had three shots, all in the final 18 minutes.
        XULA's Breno Zanolla and Carey's Henry Hampshaw were the goalkeepers. Zanolla produced four saves.
        This is XULA's second season in this sport. The Gold Rush in 2023 were 10-4-2 overall, third place at 9-2-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference and a semifinalist at the RRAC Tournament. The Gold Rush earned votes in two of the final three NAIA coaches polls.
        Next for XULA: 3 p.m. Wednesday against Florida Memorial at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, La. Admission is free to all XULA home games.
        NOTES:  The temperature was in the low 90s when the teams kicked off during the 7 o'clock hour . . . Joining Menzen, Oliveira and Zanolla in XULA's starting lineup were Nasser Benbella, Juan Braz, Eduardo dos Santos, Julio Gruba, Victor Mayrink, Matheus Moura, Diego Pacheco and Ignacio Solorza . . . Benbella, Mayrink, Moura and Pacheco are in their first season at XULA; Moura and Pacheco are freshmen . . . It was the second straight XULA opener that William Carey won 1-0 at home on a second-half goal . . . Carey's other game this season was a tie at 4 Thursday at LSU-Shreveport. LSUS and XULA were picked 1-2 in the RRAC preseason coaches poll.
