2024 Red River Athletic Conference men's soccer standings
HOBBS, N.M. —
Yahir Chacon and Angel Marban scored in the first six minutes Thursday
to help the University of the Southwest earn a 2-1
Red River Athletic Conference men's soccer victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Mustangs (3-1), picked 11th in
the RRAC preseason coaches poll, upset the No. 2 Gold Rush (1-2-1) in the conference opener for both teams.
Chacon scored his team-leading third goal 47 seconds into the game.
Marban made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season.
Gustavo Oliveira, XULA's leading scorer a year ago,
scored in the 15th minute. Then Southwest survived several Gold Rush threats.
XULA finished with nine shots, five on goal, and eight corner kicks. Southwest had seven shots, three on goal,
and one corner.
Next for XULA will be a Red River doubleheader Saturday in Dallas against
Paul Quinn at Gio Macias Field. The men's game will start at 1:30 p.m. and follow an 11 a.m. women's game.
