Bergaoui defeats No. 1 seed to win ITA regional singles title

        NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana sophomore Amira Bergaoui scored the final three points of the tiebreaker Sunday afternoon to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) against top-seeded Lucy Carpenter of city rival Loyola in the women's singles final of the NAIA Gulf ITA Regional Championships at XULA Tennis Center.
        Bergaoui, seeded third in this tournament, qualified automatically for the ITA Cup Championships Oct. 10-13 at Rome, Ga.
        Bergaoui won twice Sunday. In the morning she defeated seventh-seeded Hang Nguyen of another city rival, Dillard, 6-2, 7-5.
        As a XULA freshman, Bergaoui was NAIA first-team All-America, second-team All-Louisiana and Louisiana Freshman of the Year, Bergaoui competed with NCAA Division I players for the state awards.
