MOBILE, Ala. —
Xavier University of Louisiana's bid for an eighth semifinal appearance in the
UTR NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship ended Thursday when Tennessee Wesleyan defeated the Gold Nuggets 4-1.
The Gold Nuggets, ranked 12th in the final
coaches poll and seeded 13th at the tournament, finished 14-11.
Amira Bergaoui won in singles for the third
consecutive day and scored XULA's only point with her 6-3, 6-2 victory against
Olivia Alcala on the first court.
Mercedes Chasset clinched for the Bulldogs (17-4)
at No. 3 singles with her 6-4, 7-5 victory against
McKenna Wheatley. Tennessee Wesleyan's
Ivet Prat saved three match points against XULA freshman
Sanai LeSure in a match that Prat led 2-0 in the third set.
Prat and Chasset defeated Bergaoui and
Ana Vasilis 6-1 to
clinch the doubles point.
Tennessee Wesleyan (17-4), seeded 12th and ranked ninth,
will play top-seeded and top-ranked Keiser at 9 a.m. Friday in the semifinals.
It was the Gold Nuggets' 13th consecutive appearance
in the tournament and seventh straight quarterfinal berth. XULA won first- and second-round matches —
4-2 Wednesday against fifth-seeded Southeastern (Fla.) — despite having only five healthy players.
