2 Gold Nuggets earn 3 semifinal spots at ITA Gulf Regionals

THIBODAUX, La. - XULA women's tennis players Asadah Ma'at and Maja Brnic have earned their way into the semifinals of both the singles and doubles tournaments at the ITA Gulf Regional Championships, hosted by Dillard and the Thibodaux Regional Wellness Center.

The tournament features NAIA athletes from Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, and on Saturday, Ma'at and Brnic face a bevy of the top players in the field.

In doubles play, the duo bested Our Lady of the Lake's Carolina Guerrero and Bohdana Bilokon 8-5 to set up a semifinal match with Texas A&M Texarkana's Lucia Siddens and Kseniya Zhdanok.

Brnic made it to the singles semifinals by defeating Texarkana's Ana Gonzalez 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16 and LSU-Alexandria's Katharina Volkmann in the quarterfinals.

Ma'at's road to the semifinals took the form of a Round of 16 win over Presha Shanthamoorthi of Loyola-New Orleans, 6-2 and 6-4, and a 6-4, 6-2 win over LSUA's Kanu Rajawat in the quarterfinals.

Anais Yakan, one of three Gold Nuggets to reach the second day of competition in the tournament, fell to Volkmann 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 16.

The ITA Gulf Regional Championships conclude Sunday.
