Brnic, Ma'at stand tall at ITA Gulf Regionals

THIBODAUX, La. - Given their individual and doubles performances over the past two weeks, it was appropriate that Xavier's Maja Brnic and Asadah Ma'at shared the spotlight on the final day of the ITA Gulf Regional Championships.

The duo combined to win the 2026 doubles draw, while Brnic claimed the top prize in the women's singles bracket.

Brnic, a semifinalist in last week's HBCU National Championships, defeated William Carey's Isabella Lechuga 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals, then swept Dillard's Weichiao Chen 6-2, 6-0 to claim the title.

In doubles, Ma'at and Brnic bested Texas A&M Texarkana's Lucia Siddens and Kseniya Zhdanok in the semifinals before outdueling William Carey's Lechuga and JiAn Kang 6-2, 6-1 to win the doubles championship.

Ma'at, a finalist in the HBCU National Championships Flight B singles bracket, had earned a spot in the semifinals in this week's singles play as well. She fell to Chen 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 in a closely contested match.

The ITA Gulf Regionals, hosted this year by Dillard in conjunction with the Thibodaux Regional Wellness Center, brought together the top NAIA student-athletes from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas over a three-day competition.

The Gold Nuggets continue their fall tournament play this week, playing in LSU-New Orleans' Big Easy Classic Oct. 2 and 3 at the Privateer Tennis Center. This will be the second fall tournament this season in which Xavier student-athletes will compete against NCAA Division I competitors.
