Ma'a't finishes as runner-up at HBCU Nationals

ATLANTA - Xavier junior Asadah Ma'at finished as the Women's Singles Flight B runner-up here Saturday in the HBCU National Championships Tournament. 

Ma'at, a native of Teaneck, New Jersey, fell 6-2, 6-1 to 7th-seeded Chloe Goins of Howard at the South Fulton Tennis Center. 

It capped a great week for the Gold Nuggets, one of the few non-NCAA Schools participating in the event and by far the most successful of the small programs.

All told, Xavier women's tennis earned six quarterfinal spots, two semifinal spots, and one finals appearance across the five competitions in which they were entered - Flights A, B, and C singles, and A and B doubles.

Ma'at defeated Norfolk State's Kayla Kennedy, 8th-seeded Melissa Nanjala Mwakha of Alabama A&M, Cleanne Pickel of Alabama State, and Polina Georgieva of Jackson State en route to the finals. 

The Gold Nuggets will be back on the court next week, albeit closer to home. Next up for Xavier is the ITA Gulf Regional Championships in Thibodaux, Sept. 25-27.
