Gold Rush athlete Glenn Ross dies at age 71

        NEW ORLEANS — Glenn Ross, a three-year men's basketball letterman during the early 1970s at Xavier University of Louisiana, died July 11, 2025. He was 71 years old.
        Ross, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound center, played for the Gold Rush from 1971-74. He was a member of XULA teams that won NAIA District 30 tournament championships and won at NAIA nationals in the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons.
        Ross was a longtime employee of Southern Medical Mart in metro New Orleans, then worked in real estate after returning in 2005 to his hometown, Opelousas, La.
        Ross was a member of the last graduating class of Opelousas' Holy Ghost High School in 1971. He competed in basketball and track and field for the Firebirds, scoring 28 points in one game and grabbing 24 rebounds in another.
        Survivors include a daughter, Kerrie Ross; a grandson, Melvin Taylor; a godchild, Zoey Semien; and brothers Kevin Ross, Chuck Ross and Dwayne Ross. Farley Glenn Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Wilda Ross; his wife, Laverne Broyard Ross; and his son, Glenn Michael Ross.
        Ross' funeral was July 19, 2025, in Opelousas.
