DAPHNE, Ala. —
Unranked Faulkner University scored two second-half goals
Sunday to earn a 3-2 men's soccer victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
It was the first loss of the season
for the Gold Rush (3-1-1), a winner by shutout against NAIA top-10 opponents Mobile and William Carey in the previous two games.
XULA led 2-1 at halftime. The Eagles (4-2)
tied the score in the 47th minute on Angel Ugwumba's seventh goal this season —
Ugwumba is tied for second in the NAIA in goals — then went ahead to stay
in the 78th minute on Caden Maldonado's first goal of the season.
XULA produced one shot, but not on goal, in the final 12 minutes.
Giancarlo Dostilio was wide right
in the 81st minute.
The Gold Rush trailed for the first
time this season when Ugwumba scored in the 18th minute,
but XULA freshman
Lennart Niederlaender answered with goals
in the 23rd and 33rd minutes and with assists from
Ignacio Solorza,
then
Antonio Merola.
Venue was
Fairhope Soccer Complex, a neutral site south of Mobile.
Next for the XULA men will be their
Red River Athletic Conference opener, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. against Texas College.
