LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. —
Xavier University of Louisiana's women led 3-0 through 70 minutes Sunday
but departed Grizzly Soccer Complex with a tie at 3 against NAIA No. 17 Georgia Gwinnett.
Jessica Fuentes' penalty-kick goal
in the 87th minute completed the comeback for the Grizzlies (2-2-1).
Samira Roper gave the Gold Nuggets (1-1-1)
a 2-0 halftime lead with goals in the ninth and 37th minutes, and
Anita Roese
made it 3-0 with a goal in the 56th minute.
Alina Paiz assisted on the first and third goals.
Georgia Gwinnett, shut out in its other two home games
this season, finally scored on a Kendra Delgado goal in the 71st minute.
Gabriela Rosas cut XULA's lead to 3-2 on a goal in the 83rd minute.
XULA had two chances to win in the final 15 seconds.
GGC goalkeeper Rirei Sasaki jumped to deflect
Juliana Kottbauer's shot from 25 yards away and send the ball
over the goal. After Kottbauer's ensuing corner kick, Roper's header hit the post shortly before time expired.
Roper's goals moved her to a team-leading five
this season — Roper is tied for 15th in the NAIA — and a two-season total of 24,
two behind school career record-holder
Luci Schroeder.
XULA will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to play NAIA No. 2
William Carey at 5 p.m. Saturday. It will be the Gold Nuggets' third consecutive road game against
a ranked opponent. The next XULA home game will kick off at 1 p.m. Sept. 25 against Texas College
— the Red River Athletic Conference opener — at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, La.
