Gold Nuggets extend unbeaten streak with win over Blue Mountain

The Xavier women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 10 with a dominant, 7-0 win over Blue Mountain Christian University in Mississippi Thursday afternoon.

XULA (10-2-2, 9-0-1 SSAC) has won 9 of its last 10 matches, with the 10th match being a draw. Against Blue Mountain (2-9-2, 2-5-2 SSAC), the Gold Nuggets kept the pressure on, peppering the Toppers with 50 shots, 20 of which were on goal.

Thursday, striker Julia Gurgel scored her 29th, 30th, 31st, and 32nd goals of the season and was the big star on offense. She scored the game's first goal in the 14th minute with an assist from Paula Cortijo.

Gurgel added a goal in the 34th minute with an assist from Maureen Owusu, the 50th minute with an assist from Anita Roese, and the 53rd minute with an assist from Owusu.

Roese had a goal in the 18th minute thanks to an assist from Eduarda Queiroz, and Alina Paiz scored an unassisted goal in the 38th minute before capping the scoring with an assist from Natalia Arévalo Franco in the 82nd minute.

Defensively, XULA allowed its first shot on goal in the last Sept. 27, ending a four-game streak of holding opponents to no real scoring attempts.

Goalkeeper Aylin Yildirim finished with the clean sheet and the win. Yildirim and Luisia Bella, who have split time as Xavier's starting keeper, have combined to post five straight shutouts.

The Gold Nuggets have a pair of huge matches on the immediate horizon, beginning Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with a visit to No. 18 Tennessee Southern, one of two teams currently ahead of XULA in the SSAC standings.

A week later, Xavier will play at No. 10 William Carey, the current first-place team in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
