Men's Soccer gets key SSAC win over Thomas

METAIRIE, La. - After a week's break, the Xavier men's soccer team returned to action in style Tuesday afternoon, defeating Thomas 4-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

The teams were originally scheduled to play in September, but dangerous weather conditions forced the reschedule.

On Tuesday, XULA (5-4-1, 3-2-1 ASC) jumped out to an early lead when Benjamin Iglesias scored a ninth-minute goal with an assist from Felipe Braga.

Thomas (5-9, 1-7 SSAC) tied the match in the 22nd minute, but the Gold Rush scored three unanswered goals to blow the game open.

Cole Spady delivered the game-winning goal in the 34th minute thanks to an assist from Sebastian Pinto.

Braga followed with a goal off of a dual assist from Spady and Pinto in the 38th minute, and Ellison Haynes buried an assist from Diego Larralde in the 59th minute to put the game well out of reach.

Defensively, XULA limited Thomas to 9 shots, 5 of which were on goal. Starting keeper Lenno Schmidt worked 84 minutes of the match and made 4 saves before exiting the game for Mauricio Bosco, who maintained the lead.

It was a well-timed win for Xavier, which jumped from seventh place into a tie for fifth with William Carey in the SSAC regular-season race.

Tuesday's match was the first of three SSAC contests for the Gold Rush this week. Up next will be a Thursday home match against Andrew College. It will be Pink Day at Lefreniere Park, and fans are encouraged to dress for the occasion.
