BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The Gold Rush proved Friday that college tennis matches aren't over until someone earns a fourth point.
After losing the doubles point to Coastal Georgia, No. 11 Xavier (5-2) rattled off 4-of-6 wins in the singles matches to claim the 4-3 victory on Day 2 of the Coastal Invitational.
The quality for Xavier was most vividly seen among its top four singles players.
Nereo Suarez, currently rated as the No. 4 singles player in the nation, took down Artur Pons Medina 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 1 match.
In the No. 2 match, Christian Sanchez withstood a spirited challenge from Salvador Pons Medina, eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The No. 3 point went to Gabriel Velez, who defeated Gonzalo Tano 6-2, 6-4, and the No. 4 point went to Emmanuel Jebutu by virtue of a 6-4, 6-4 win over Leonard Daguinot.
This was XULA's second win in as many days in the Coastal Invitational. Thursday, they defeated No. 9 SCAD-Savannah in the tournament opener.
Xavier is scheduled to complete its three-match series in the Coastal Invitational Saturday morning with a visit to SCAD-Atlanta. However, the potential for rain in the region is threatening that contest.
If the SCAD-Atlanta match is canceled, Xavier's next match would be Friday, Feb. 27, at home against NCAA Division I opponent Norfolk State.
