NEW ORLEANS - Xavier's women's tennis team earned a major statement win here Saturday, defeating NCAA Division I opponent Norfolk State 4-2 in non-conference play.
The match got off to a great start for the Gold Nuggets (5-3), who claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Maja Brnic and McKenna Wheatley defeated Ines Sabadie and Yuliya Yurkova 7-6(4) in a hotly contested No. 1 doubles match, while Ana Sabikova and Makai Sales bested Elena Martinez Prado and Angelina Maniawska 7-5 at No. 2.
The singles matches worked out equally well for the home-standing Gold Nuggets.
Brnic won at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-4 showing against Yurkova, Wheatley outdueled Martinez Prado 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, and Anais Yakan won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 over Maniawska at No. 4.
Xavier travels to Jackson State on Saturday for a second consecutive match against an NCAA Division I team.
