NEW ORLEANS - XULA got strong performances from across its roster here Tuesday afternoon, downing crosstown rival Loyola in the Gold Rush's NAIA-opening contest.
Xavier (1-1) had played valiantly against NCAA Division II powerhouse West Florida on Sunday, and that quality carried over well against the Wolfpack.
The Gold Rush picked up the doubles point with wins by VanDer Woody and Christian Sanchez at No. 2, and by Martin Rivera and Gabriel Velez at 3.
In singles action, Xavier No. 1 Nereo Suarez posted a dominant win over Sam Izrael, 6-2 and 6-2.
At the No. 3 singles position, Velez bested Alfredo Gallegos 6-4 and 7-6 in a back-and-forth match that ended on 5 tiebreak points.
Sanchez overcame a tough loss in the opening set of the No. 4 singles match, a 7-6 loss after 3 tiebreaks, to win the point over Samuel Marin with wins of 6-1 and 6-2 in the subsequent sets.
Emmanuel Jebutu rounded out the scoring for the Gold Rush with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Spencer Matz.
Next up for Xavier will be a Saturday visit to Alabama for a 1 p.m. match against the University of Mobile.
