NEW ORLEANS - The XULA women's tennis team registered one of the biggest wins of the season Wednesday, defeating previously undefeated NCAA Division II opponent Drury 6-1 in non-conference play.
Xavier (8-4), currently ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, swept the doubles matches and won 5-of-6 in the singles from Drury (6-1), which plays in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and is ranked as the No. 49 team in Division II by the ITA.
In the doubles matches, McKenna Wheatley and Maja Brnic defeated Naz Yaver and Antanina Novik 6-4 at No. 1, Ana Sabikova and Makai Sales defeated Franca Piaggi and Leana Chanove 6-3 at No. 2, and Asadah Ma'at and Valeria Ortega defeated Ana Luisa Sathler Rosa and Ina Bechle 6-1 at No. 3.
Brnic was strong as the Gold Nuggets' No. 1 single, defeating Chanove 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2, Wheatley defeated Novik 6-2, 6-1.
No. 3 and singles were even stronger for Xavier, as Sabikova and Anais Yakan each defeated their respective opponent 6-1, 6-1.
The Gold Nuggets earned their final point of the day at No. 6 singles, where Sales defeated Sathler Rosa 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.
Next up for Xavier is a huge road trip to Rome, Georgia, and the 2026 NAIA Blast Off Tournament, where matches against No. 12 Cumberlands (Ky.) and No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan await. The Cumberlands match is scheduled for Friday, and the Tennessee Wesleyan match is scheduled for Saturday.
