NEW ORLEANS - The Xavier women's tennis team showed its mettle Thursday, logging a 6-1 win over No. 5 Missouri Baptist.
The win for XULA (10-5) put a punctuation mark on the No.4 Gold Rush's run of three consecutive matches against top-5 opponents. With the victory over Missouri Baptist (10-2), Xavier made it 2-for-3 in its difficult mid-season swing.
Early in the day, XULA claimed the doubles point with Nereo Suarez and Christian Sanchez defeating Luca da Silva Ebenriter and Sebastian Junghanns 6-3 at No. 1 and Martin Rivera and Gabriel Velez defeating Omar Farahat and Arkhip Tokmakov at No. 2, also by a score of 6-3.
The singles matches turned into an exciting collection of matchups, most notably between Suarez and Ebenriter, the respective No. 4 and 28 singles in the nation, at No. 1. Suarez eventually emerged victorious, 6-3, 7-6(7).
Emmanuel Jebutu picked up an exciting win of his own at No. 3, Strahinja Radanovic 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-4.
No. 4 singles was also a back-and-forth affair, but Edilson Rosa outduelled Tokmakov 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
Sanchez defeated Farahat 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, and Martin Rivera defeated Nicolas Sanchez 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
Next up for Xavier will be a fourth consecutive match against a top-15 opponent. No. 14 St. Thomas (Fla.) will visit the XULA Tennis Complex on Wednesday, March 25, at 2 p.m.
