Men's Tennis best St. Thomas in non-conference play

NEW ORLEANS - The Xavier men's tennis team was put to the test Wednesday, but ultimately prevailed in a 4-3 battle against St. Thomas (Fla.). 

Xavier (11-5), still ranked No. 4 in the nation according to ITA and No. 8 in the NAIA polls, got the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. 

At No. 1, the always strong duo of Nereo Suarez and Christian Sanchez defeated Pablo Olmedo and Ivan Menendez 6-2, and at No. 3, Martin Rivera and Gabriel Velez defeated Pierlugi Cruypemmimck and Maxime Navrotchi 7-5. 

St. Tomas (3-9) picked up three wins in the singles matches, but XULA kept pace to secure the victory. 

Sanchez defeated Olmedo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, Velez defeated Jan Gewaltig 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 4, and Edilson Rosa defeated Cruypemmimck 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. 

The Gold Rush take to the road for their next two matches, both of which will occur in Florida. Their first stop is Bradenton for a match against New College of Florida on Sunday. Xavier will then travel to Southeastern Florida on Monday.
