NEW ORLEANS - The Gold Nuggets fond themselves in quite the battle here Wednesday afternoon, but Xavier's women's tennis team gutted out a 4-3 win over St. Thomas of Florida.
St. Thomas took the doubles point, but Xavier (12-5) swept through numbers 1-4 singles to secure the win.
Maja Brnic defeated Caterina Antonini 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1, McKenna Wheatley defeated Maeva Roguet 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2, Ana Sabikova defeated Sachely Carerra 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3, and Anais Yakan defeated Sezin Akin 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
Wednesday's match coincided with the release of the March 25 NAIA national poll, on which XULA remains ranked No. 6. The Gold Nuggets are rated No. 4 in the nation, according to ITA.
Next up for Xavier is a trip to Florida for a match against New College on Sunday in Bradenton, and a showdown with No. 4 Southeastern in Lakeland on Monday.
